VR Research FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions in VR - Answered

We get asked a lot of questions. Any eXpert does. It's a sign of trust. One we value greatly. So, to help our clients, future clients, and virtually everyone trying to learn a bit more about Virtual Reality and how it can be used to support research studies, we created this VR research FAQ page. These are some of the most common questions we get asked on a regular basis.

VR Research FAQ.

How do I conduct a VR Research study?

There are 3 main considerations when conducting a VR research study: The content, The data collection process, and the participants. We are here to help you through every step of the way.

Work with our team to design and create content that will immerse the participants the way you intend to. Depending on your deployment strategy we can build in custom tools to collect specific data within the simulation, or help integrate 3rd party data collection forms (qualities, google forms, survey monkey, etc.) to get the data you need.

Participants can be difficult to find depending on access to VR headsets, which is why we have relationships with VR arcades to source participants for your study and have built a network of remote participants from around the world that can participate in your study.

I am writing a grant and need help with the technical aspect. Where can I look for help?

Virtual Reality is a whole new industry, making it hard to write technical briefs that have an impact but also make sense to granting committees and ethics boards. Working with our team of eXperts we’ll ensure your technical submission does both.

Are there options for 2D play?

Yes! We can optimize our eLearning VR simulations 2D play on standard computers, both PC and Mac. Converting VR simulations to 2D experiences has proven very useful for remote students that do not have access to a VR headset. During your first consultation our team will assess your deployment needs and develop our simulations accordingly.

What types of data can I collect?

XpertVR utilizes Cognitive 3D for all of its in simulation data collection needs. Cognitive tracks user behaviour such as Eye-tracking, user actions and events. Additional data can be collected with special hardware that has biometric sensors. Cognitive 3D also provides easy-to-understand after-action reports for 1 or multiple participants to better understand your data. 3rd party data collection can also be used with our simulations through pre & post-simulation surveys.

Am I able to monitor participants live?

We normally do not give researchers the ability to monitor participants live. Simply because Cognitive 3D has such a robust 3D Replay feature that most researchers don’t find it necessary. That being we have set up video calls with participants to monitor them live in past studies. If you require video calls please contact us so we can help you set it up.

What types of headsets work best for conducting VR research studies?

This depends on the needs of your study. PC-VR headsets provide the most integrations of 3rd party hardware & software for biometric data collection and exporting custom data from a simulation. This type of hardware is best used in a lab setting where you are able to have participants meet with you in person.

Stand-alone headsets such as the Oculus Quest are the most purchased headset by consumers and are sold at reasonable prices for bulk purchasing.  Our network of VR participants has access to both PC-VR headsets as well as stand-alone.
